The Ways An Air Conditioner Compressor Can Fail, and What To Do About It

Air conditioner compressors usually fail due to one of two conditions: time and hours of operation (wear out), or abuse. There are some failures that can occur elsewhere in the system that will cause a compressor failure, but these are less common unless the system has been substantially abused.

Usually abuse is a result of extended running with improper freon charge, or as a consequence of improper service along the way. This improper service can include overcharging, undercharging, installing the wrong starter capacitor as a replacement, removing (rather than repairing/replacing) the thermal limiter, insufficient oil, mixing incompatible oil types, or wrong oil, installing the compressor on a system that had a major burnout without taking proper steps to remove the acid from the system, installing the wrong compressor (too small) for the system, or installing a new compressor on a system that had some other failure that was never diagnosed.

The compressor can fail in only a handful of different ways. It can fail open, fail shorted, experience a bearing failure, or a piston failure (throw a rod), or experience a valve failure. That is pretty much the entire list.

When a compressor fails open, a wire inside the compressor breaks. This is unserviceable and the symptom is that the compressor does not run, though it may hum. If the compressor fails open, and following the steps here does not fix it, then the system may be a good candidate for a new compressor. This failure causes no further failures and won’t damage the rest of the system; if the rest of the system is not decrepit then it would be cost effective to just put a new compressor in.

Testing for a failed open compressor is easy. Pop the electrical cover for the compressor off, and remove the wires and the thermal limiter. Using an ohmmeter, measure the impedance from one terminal to another across all three terminals of the compressor. Also measure the impedance to the case of the compressor for all three terminals.

You should read low impedance values for all terminal to terminal connections (a few hundred ohms or less) and you should have a high impedance (several kilo-ohms or greater) for all terminals to the case (which is ground). If any of the terminal to terminal connections is a very high impedance, you have a failed open compressor. In very rare cases, a failed open compressor may show a low impedance to ground from one terminal (which will be one of the terminals associated with the failed open). In this case, the broken wire has moved and is contacting the case. This condition – which is quite rare but not impossible – could cause a breaker to trip and could result in a misdiagnosis of failed short. Be careful here; do an acid test of the contents of the lines before deciding how to proceed with repair.

When a compressor fails short, what happens is that insulation on the wires has worn off or burned off or broken inside the compressor. This allows a wire on a motor winding to touch something it should not touch – most commonly itself a turn or two further along on the motor winding. This results in a “shorted winding” which will stop the compressor immediately and cause it to heat up and burn internally.

Bad bearings can cause a failed short. Either the rotor wobbles enough to contact the stator, resulting in insulation damage that shorts the rotor either to ground or to the stator, or end bearing wear can allow the stator to shift down over time until it begins to rub against the stator ends or the housing.

Usually when one of these shorts occur, it is not immediately a hard short – meaning that initially the contact is intermittent and comes and goes. Every time the short occurs, the compressor torque drops sharply, the compressor may shudder a bit visibly as a result, and this shudder shakes the winding enough to separate the short. While the short is in place, the current through the shorted winding shoots up and a lot of heat is produced. Also, usually the short will blow some sparks – which produces acid inside the air conditioner system by decomposing the freon into a mixture of hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acid.

Over time (possibly a couple of weeks, usually less) the shuddering and the sparking and the heat and the acid cause insulation to fail rapidly on the winding. Ultimately, the winding loses enough insulation that the inside of the compressor is literally burning. This will only go on for a few minutes but in that time the compressor destroys itself and fills the system with acid. Then the compressor stops. It may at that time melt a wire loose and short to the housing (which can trip your house main breaker) or it may not. If the initial cause of the failure was bad bearings causing the rotor to rub, then usually when the thing finally dies it will be shorted to the housing.

If it shorts to the housing, it will blow fuses and/or breakers and your ohmmeter will show a very low impedance from one or more windings to ground. If it does not short to the housing, then it will just stop. You still establish the type of failure using an ohmmeter.

You cannot directly diagnose a failed short with an ohmmeter unless it shorts to the housing – a shorted winding won’t show up with an ohmmeter though it would with an inductance meter (but who has one of those?) Instead, you have to infer the failed short. You do this by establishing the the ohmmeter gives normal readings, the starter capacitor is good, power is arriving at the compressor, AND an acid test of the freon shows acid present.

With a failed short, just give up. Change everything, including the lines if possible. It is not worth fixing; it is full of acid and therefore is all junk. Further, a failed short could have been initially induced by some other failure in the system that caused a compressor overload; by replacing the whole system you also will get rid of that potential other problem.

Less commonly, a compressor will have a bearing failure, piston failure or a valve failure. These mechanical failures usually just signal wear out but could signal abuse (low lubricant levels, thermal limiter removed so compressor overheats, chronic low freon condition due to un-repaired leaks). More rarely, they can signal another failure in the system such as a reversing valve problem or an expansion valve problem that winds up letting liquid freon get into the suction side of the compressor.

If a bearing fails, usually you will know because the compressor will sound like a motor with a bad bearing, or it will lock up and refuse to run. In the worst case, the rotor will wobble, the windings will rub on the stator, and you will wind up with a failed short.

If the compressor locks up mechanically and fails to run, you will know because it will buzz very loudly for a few seconds and may shudder (just like any stalled motor) until the thermal limiter cuts it off. When you do your electrical checks, you will find no evidence of failed open or failed short. The acid test will show no acid. In this case, you might try a hard-start kit but if the compressor has failed mechanically the hard-start kit won’t get the compressor to start. In this case, replacing the compressor is a good plan so long as the rest of the system is not decrepit. After replacing the compressor, you must carefully analyze the performance of the entire system to determine whether the compressor problem was induced by something else.

Rarely, the compressor will experience a valve failure. In this case, it will either sit there and appear to run happily but will pump no fluid (valve won’t close), or it will lock up due to an inability to move the fluid out of the compression chamber (valve won’t open). If it is running happily, then once you have established that there is indeed plenty of freon in the system, but nothing is moving, then you have no choice but to change the compressor. Again, a system with a compressor that has had a valve failure is a good candidate for a new compressor.

Now, if the compressor is mechanically locked up it could be because of a couple of things. If the compressor is on a heat pump, make sure the reversing valve is not stuck half way. Also make sure the expansion valve is working; if it is blocked it can lock the compressor. Also make sure the filter is not clogged. I once saw a system that had a locked compressor due to liquid lock. Some idiot had “serviced” the system by adding freon, and adding freon, and adding freon until the thing was completely full of liquid. Trust me; that does not work.

Should diagnosis show a clogged filter, then this should be taken as positive evidence of some failure in the system OTHER than a compressor failure. Typically, it will be metal fragments out of the compressor that clogs the filter. This can only happen if something is causing the compressor to wear very rapidly, particularly in the pistons, the rings, the bores, and the bearings. Either the compressor has vastly insufficient lubrication OR (and more commonly) liquid freon is getting into the compressor on the suction line. This behavior must be stopped. Look at the expansion valve and at the reversing valve (for a heat pump).

Often an old system experiences enough mechanical wear internally that it is “worn in” and needs more torque to start against the system load than can be delivered. This system will sound just like one with a locked bearing; the compressor will buzz loudly for a few seconds then the thermal limiter will kill it. Occasionally, this system will start right up if you whack the compressor with a rubber mallet while it is buzzing. Such a system is a good candidate for a hard-start kit. This kit stores energy and, when the compressor is told to start, dumps extra current into the compressor for a second or so. This overloads the compressor, but gives some extra torque for a short time and is often enough to make that compressor run again. I have had hard-start kits give me an extra 8 or 9 years in some old units that otherwise I would have been replacing. Conversely, I have had them give only a few months. It is your call, but considering how cheap a hard-start kit is, it is worth trying when the symptoms are as described.

Stop Your Air Conditioner Leaking Water

The three most common reasons for water leakage from heat pumps are dirty filters or heat exchanging coils, blocked drains, and a shortage of refrigerant. They are pretty simple to diagnose and repair.

Remember: Turn off the power source to your air conditioner before trying any of the following!

1. Dirty Filters and or Blocked Heat Exchanger

When the filters, or heat exchanging coil, are dirty or blocked, this causes a restriction in air flow. This in turn can then cause the temperature of the coil to drop. If the coil temperature drops below zero, moisture in the air that is condensating on the coil can freeze and form little ice flakes which are then blown out of your air conditioner, causing water leakage.

Check the filters, and if they look dirty, give them a good clean with the hosepipe or shower head. Remove all the dirt and give them a spray with a kitchen or bathroom antiseptic spray to kill any bacteria or mould on them.

Check the aluminum coil behind the filters. If it is covered in dry lint, try vacuuming the coil carefully with the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. If it is particularly dirty, you will need to use a garden spray bottle and a strong grease removing kitchen cleaner. Spray it on the coil, allow to work for around 5 minutes then rinse the coil off with the spray bottle. This should remove the dirt and improve the air flow. Please be careful not to spray water near to the electrical panel on the air conditioner.

2. Blocked Drains

On a wall mounted ductless air conditioner, a blocked drain can be pretty obvious and easy to diagnose. Water will usually drip down the wall from the back of the unit and may also leak through the air outlet at the front if the drain is blocked.

Stand on a small ladder and look down from the top of the air conditioner. Towards the bottom of the heat exchanger is a little plastic tray which is designed to catch the condensate produced by the cooling mode of the air conditioner. Check that this tray is not full of water or overflowing.

If your outdoor unit is directly behind the wall the indoor unit is mounted on, your drain pipe will likely follow the pipework through the wall and drip into the garden. If this is the case, find the end of the drain pipe outside, wipe the end clean with a cloth then blow as hard as you can into it. This should clear any blockages.

If you cannot clear the blockage yourself, or if it is buried inside the wall, you will need to phone a professional HVAC service company and book a service call.

3. Your Air Conditioner Has A Leak and Has Lost Refrigerant

If your air filters and heat exchanger are clean and you have lots of air flow, your air conditioner should deliver plenty of cool air. If it is struggling to cool the room for a few hours and then starts leaking water from the air vent it may be short on refrigerant.

Set your heat pump to the lowest setting possible and leave it to run for a little while. Then check the heat exchanging coil underneath the filters. If it is covered in ice, your air conditioner has a leak and requires a professional to service it. If your air conditioner is leaking refrigerant, the leak will need to be found and fixed before it can have additional refrigerant added to it.

This article is going to seem all negative. The truth is there are lots of things about women that men find attractive. Different men, find different things attractive. There’s a common number of things that most men do NOT find attractive about a woman. I’m talking about a guy that’s looking for a long term relationship rather than a guy who is looking for just casual sex.

1) She’s clingy, insecure

Most men can tolerate a woman being clingy in the later parts of the relationship. But in the early parts if she appears clingy, he’ll want to run a mile. Suggesting that you get married or planning moving in together is just quite frankly scary. Texting or phoning 40 times a day with every minor worry you may have is also very excessive. It makes him feel as though you are smothering his life and you are basically going to not let him get on with his work or social life with his friends.

2) Playing hard to get (the opposite to clingy)

Yes, despite the fact you’ve probably been advised from loads of other books or web sites that playing hard to get is the thing to do, they were wrong in my opinion. Yes, you shouldn’t offer yourself on a plate because that is boring, but you certainly shouldn’t play hard to get either, you need to find a place in between. Texting back hours or days later to virtually every text, just leaves him frustrated and makes him think you are just not that interested. Not so much hours later, but if you wait to text him days later that will seriously annoy him. He’ll then start to think you are not that interested in him, he’ll start to review how he feels about you and will come to the conclusion that he doesn’t have enough evidence to show he’s interested in you, nor you are interested in him. The result will be that he’ll get so frustrated and bored that he’ll think, do I have a better option? If he doesn’t have a better option at that moment in time, then you can bet he’ll go out there and look for a better option. If he does then you can bet he’ll just get bored of waiting for you to be genuine and will start dating other ladies instead. Men always keep plenty of options in reserve, so don’t get complacent.

Guys prefer slow progress, but they always want to see progress, if they see things, going backwards or they hit a brick wall and end up not getting any progress, that blows a guys excitement about the relationship. He might get up and start again a few times if he’s that determined but he’ll eventually just give up and feel it’s one step forward and two steps back all the time. The progress is a guys excitement, cut that progress off and he’ll become bored and frustrated. So if you play it cool, then you are likely to cool him down and make him less hot for you.

I’ve touched on this in other articles and explained why other books and web sites seem to have misinterpreted or misrepresented playing hard to get.

In my opinion this is what playing hard to get does. Instead of seeing a woman as a potential for a long term relationship a woman who plays hard to get frustrates a guy. Guys don’t like losing, so they then see the woman as an exciting challenge. Consciously they still see the woman as attractive and get a kick out of the thrill of chasing the woman, but sub-consciously the woman has demonstrated by frustrating him and not being her genuine self that she is not right long term (after all she hasn’t acted herself, so has he got a real picture of her?). Some guys will give up when a woman plays hard to get because they’ll realise that woman playing hard to get has never worked in the past. Other guys will carry on the challenge of chasing her, then suddenly when she falls for him, he loses interest. The woman then thinks she’s lost him because she’s then looked too keen because she’s fallen for him. But really she lost him because she did not act her genuine self early on and first impressions count to a guy. So ladies be yourself, don’t follow some guide that tells you to act like you should play hard to get. Don’t offer yourself on a plate, but don’t play hard to get either, just move things at the speed you are comfortable with. If a guy finishes you, it’s because he believes you are not right for each other, don’t make things more complicated by playing games that you think will win over every guy on earth (that’s not possible!).

3) She’s a ‘drama queen’ (creating drama, even if there is none)

I’ve got to admit, it is sometimes entertaining listening to women whinging about minor niggles. However it starts to get a bit tedious, when she starts making those minor niggles into big issues. All of a sudden someone says “hello” to her, then all of a sudden she analyses it as being said in the wrong tone of voice. Then she starts working out why he or she said “hello” in that tone of voice. Then a story created about why that person hates her so much and is now being bitchy towards her. Then all of a sudden she starts creating stories about that person, saying how she/he does this and that. Then she just works herself into a frenzy and starts phoning and texting all her friends to say he/she did this and that. Gosh, what a drama!

The other element of it is he says or does something wrong in her opinion. Then she goes quiet, starts sulking on him. He doesn’t have a clue what he’s done wrong, in his opinion he hasn’t said or done anything wrong, because she’s misinterpreted or thought a bit too much about something he’s said. He asks her what’s wrong, she sulkily says nothing. Then spends the next few weeks with a long face. Then all of a sudden she bursts, goes into a mad rage and every minor thing that’s frustrated her in the past few weeks comes out of her mouth in a mad rage.

If a man asks you what is wrong, tell him in a calm manner, sometimes he doesn’t know what he’s done wrong, other times you just think he’s said or done something to annoy you when, really you’ve just looked at the situation too complexly. If you tell him in a calm manner he’s more likely to tell you the truth, if you come at him in a fit of rage, he’s more likely to become defensive, rage back and tell lies in the heat of the moment or else say things in the wrong way which makes it sound like a lie. Have regular fits of rage with him and he’ll get stressed and no man wants to be stressed whilst in a relationship, particularly in the early stages. If you do make him stressed he’ll at least start to lose interest in you and at the most think you are a psycho and try and run away. Guys are not mind readers, nor do they like making a drama out of life, life is difficult enough without making it even more complicated.

4) Don’t feel she’s really interested

I’ve touched on this issue in another point. Guys who want a long term relationship, like to think that the woman is just as interested as him. If he’s only slightly interested at the moment, he’ll hope she’s only slightly interested. If he’s really interested, the he hopes she has the guts to demonstrate she’s really interested too. What guys don’t want is a woman that appears to be not interested at all. She meets up with him, they have fun, then nothing. No texts, no phone calls, just plain boring nothing. Is she interested, is she not interested? He doesn’t know, by the fact she doesn’t reply to his texts promptly, he’s guessing not that interested. Guys who are looking for long term relationships get bored of that. They want to find a woman that will eventually devote herself to him, that will be happy to have children with him and will settle down with him. He doesn’t want that in the first few months, but in his mind he’s looking to see that potential in the first few months to move towards that. If he doesn’t see that potential and she doesn’t seem that bothered about meeting up with him or communicating with him, he’ll just get bored and frustrated and find someone who is going to treat him right.

5) Thinks she’s playing “games”

Guys looking for a long term relationship want to find a genuine woman, who is caring and nurturing, who suits his personality. They don’t want a woman who plays games, pretends she doesn’t fancy him that much, makes him do things just to prove something or any other form of game playing. He just wants a woman who he has fun with, he finds sexy, who shows potential to be a long term partner. Play games and you will confuse him and also make him think your personality is rather annoying, the most you’ll get out of him once he’s decided that, is casual sex, he’ll play games with you. Playing games may seem like good fun to a woman, but to a man, they are just confusing, annoying and a big turn off (from a relationship point of view). Does he want to spend the rest of his life with a woman who plays immature games with his head, I doubt it!

6) She’s focused on money (gold digger)

Men are always cautious of women that spend loads of money and who expect to be treated like a princess. Tell him you have serious debts and go out buying loads of clothes every weekend and spend all your wages and he won’t be impressed. Guys save money to be able to afford a decent house when they get married. Some will even scrimp on buying a cheap car and live with their parents, just for the sake of saving money to have the maximum amount of cash to look after a family in the future. Spending all your wages every month on unnecessary items is just going to make him think this woman is going to bankrupt me and my children in no time. My children are not even going to see any inheritance when I die, because she’ll have spent it all.

Men expect to be the breadwinner even with women working these days. They prefer a woman to at least have the choice of staying at home and looking after the kids, even if the woman does opt to go back to work. The sensible men start saving for a family long before they are in a long term relationship, because ultimately he’ll expect to be engaged after a year and married after two years, then after three years have a family. That’s not enough time to save for a house, save for children, save for a people carrier etc, he needs to start saving long before that.

So before you decide to call your guy tight, even if he is a millionaire, he’s still likely to be frugal with his money, because money can easily come and easily go, even if you are a millionaire. The other element of being a gold digger is a woman who actively seeks a bloke because he’s got loads of money. I hear an immense amount of women saying something to the effect of, he’s ugly as hell, but he’s got plenty of money so I’d marry him and get a divorce. Whilst fair enough you probably have this opinion, it’s not particularly good to express any form of wanting money in front of a guy. It gives him the impression you are a bimbo and you are going to snap his money off him that he saved for starting a family and make his life a misery.

7) Constantly finding “flaws” with him, and telling him.

A lot of guys absolutely hate this. However I like a woman to tell me what I’ve done wrong rather than go into a sulk, communication is important in a relationship and I like a woman who can communicate in a civil manner. I suppose it depends on the balance, if she’s just constantly whining on about everything I’ve done wrong and whining because she’s being fussy or whining about minor things, that’s too much negative for any man to cope with. But if she compliments occasionally and then whines about the thing I’ve done wrong there’s a good balance and not too much negative because it’s being slightly outweighed by the positive. No guy is going to want to spend the rest of their life with a woman that is going to drop him into a deep depression and tell him how useless he is. If you think about it, you probably wouldn’t tolerate a guy that did the same to you.

8) Not feeling appreciated or feeling as though she’s enjoying herself with him

You may be shocked to know but even the most confident of blokes are lacking confidence with women. Yes, he maybe confident in other elements of his life and he may seem outwardly confident, but women are slightly unpredictable. If he hasn’t found the right woman yet, then to a certain degree he either hasn’t found the right woman or hasn’t had the confidence with the right woman. We all start off as babies and work our way into adulthood, despite all the macho front guys put on, they never really lose their need to be nurtured and feel wanted and appreciated. 9) Goes out on night out with her friends all the time and doesn’t text

I’ve had women saying, my mobile signal is not good in the place that I’m going out to. I take that as a hint she doesn’t want to be contacted or if I do contact her she won’t bother texting back. Then the next morning comes around and she still hasn’t text you to tell you she is alright. You get worried, you don’t want to wake her up, but you also don’t want to seem soppy or clingy or insecure by texting her the next morning. You simply want a text from her to say, she’s alright, a bit hungover but she’ll recover. Instead nothing! Then you start to think maybe she’s ended up in hospital, maybe she’s too ill to text, maybe she’s ended up staying round a guys house for the night. Then you start thinking is our relationship really working out, can I trust her enough not to be messing about with other blokes and the answer is usually “no” in the early stages. So then you start questioning whether the relationship is really going alright, you don’t have enough evidence to suggest it is, so you come to conclusion that if she doesn’t text you within a few hours, then she obviously doesn’t really value you and isn’t really thinking about you. The longer the time drags on the more likely you are to phone her and say, this just isn’t working out. Or if the relationship has been going for a while and you are maybe willing to give her another chance, then you may consider saying to her “Can you please text me to say that you are alright and safe when you get home or when you wake up the next morning?” Guys do worry about women, not just through jealousy but through safety. If you value him, then text him, even if he doesn’t appear to be attached to you yet, it’s nice to receive a text and shows you’ve been thinking about him. If you do this you are more than likely to get a text back from him saying,do you fancy going out for dinner this evening or whatever.

10) Drinks too much and/or smokes

There’s nothing worse than dating a ladette or an unhealthy women. Ok, guys aren’t particularly bothered about you having a bar of chocolate and if they were really bothered about your weight they wouldn’t be dating you. They are bothered about things that damage a woman’s fertility. If a guy wants a long term relationship with a woman, then a woman’s fertility is very important to him. Drinking too much has lots of different consequences, it can lead to violence which could cause damage to a woman’s body. Alcohol quadruples women’s testosterone levels (hence makes her more likely to engage in violence) and as you can imagine high male hormonal levels doesn’t really do her fertility any good either. High testosterone levels leads to a woman being more likely to have casual sex with a bloke, apart from the implications on her being faithful, having casual sex can increase her chances of getting a variety of sexually transmitted diseases including HPV which leads to cervical cancer and chlamydia which leads to endometriosis. Add to that excessive amounts of alcohol can do damage to lots of her internal organs and even her mental health. I’m not saying women shouldn’t drink alcohol, nor am I saying that blokes don’t want a woman to drink alcohol. What I would say is, if you want to attract a man for a long term relationship, drink in moderation and not like a ladette. And don’t talk about going out and getting drunk and wasted, it’s only attractive to a guy that wants to use you for casual sex.

Smoking of course is another one that damages her body. Does a guy really want to be having children with a woman who might die prematurely of lung cancer or chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder? No, a guy wants a woman that is around to look after her kids and form a proper family unit for as long as possible. There’s lots of other ways that smoking does damage, but even imagine a woman smoking throughout the pregnancy, then smoking after the pregnancy and exposing their baby to the smoke. Lots of women proclaim they will give up when they become pregnant, but ultimately they don’t find out their pregnant until 4 to 8 weeks into the pregnancy, by that time the baby has ingested up to 8 weeks worth of cigarettes before you’ve even started to give up. Then add to that the stress on your body when you decide to give up, that stress is going to transfer to the baby. I’m often walking through town and spot a pretty lady who catches my eye. Then all of a sudden she ruffles about in her hand bag. You look again and find that she suddenly has a cigarette in her mouth. As soon as I see that I immediately think “ok, not that pretty then”. There are guys out there that smoke and there are guys out there that don’t mind a smoker, but I believe they are in a minority. Try and give up, it’s not only unhealthy, it’s an immense waste of your money that could be spent on something better.

11) Too busy for a relationship

It takes a lot of time for a guy to think of somewhere to go with a woman, think of a few suitable times and dates for him to meet with her. Then to actually have the guts to either phone or even text her and risk being knocked back. It seems that the modern day woman either doesn’t have that much time to spare these days for guys or else is playing games with him. He phones up and asks if she fancies meeting up, he gets one of two answers.

A) She says, no I’m busy that day, I’m going to the gym. So he thinks going to the gym, she goes there five nights a week surely she can spare one night to meet up with me. But trying to be patient and negotiate with her, he says well what about this night, she says, oh I’m going out with my friends that night, he says ok. Eventually after a few tries he gives in and just says maybe we can arrange another time next week, I’ll give you a ring (pissed off, humiliated bloke, that really is NOT going to ring you!).

He puts the phone down and starts to think about what she said. In his mind she’s telling him she’s not interested, he offered some alternatives she didn’t seem interested, she didn’t offer him any alternative dates. The biggest mistake of all is she considers going to the gym five nights a week is a far better option than meeting up with him one night of the week. The result is, he’ll quickly realise you are neither interested in him, bothered about meeting up with him and even if you are you’ve just turned him off from wanting a long term relationship anyway. You are incapable of negotiating with him, which is an important part of a long term relationship. You’ve moved in a short space of time from being good enough for him to raise the guts to ask you out an a date, to being boring and unattractive to him. His next step is to consider his options with another woman.

B) He phones up arranges a date and time to meet her, gets prepared to go. Then an hour before, she texts saying sorry, got to do the gardening or the housework today. That is going to piss a guy off even more than the last scenario. Not only did you agree to meet up then cancel at last minute (probably after he’s told people, how humiliated would you feel!), he reserved the time for you and so probably turned down offers from friends, but you also piss him off even more by saying you are busy doing gardening or housework. With the first option there would probably be a glimmer of hope he’d give you a second chance. With this option, he’d have to be a hell of a patient guy to tolerate this kind of annoyance.

It’s amazing how many women ask me what they’ve done wrong in this scenario (female friends and people on this web site), they really don’t see how it could possibly be classed as treating a guy badly. Believe it or not, I’ve had loads of women contact me again after dishing me the above scenarios, wondering why I’m not contacting them anymore! I’ve usually moved on by the time they contact me and found someone else who is treating me much better. As soon as a guy gets into the above process, the longer it takes for a woman to contact him again the more unattractive he will see her and the more likely he won’t give her any consideration anymore, even if she does decide to make an effort.

So women, word of warning, if you don’t have time for a guy, don’t expect him to give you any more time going out with you. If you can’t make it on a particular date don’t give him lame excuses, have some decent excuses (family parties, family crisis etc, not going to the gym or doing the gardening, you can do them any day of the week). If you do want to see him again, give him an alternative date when you can meet him. If you do make the mistake of doing one of the above. Phone him back as soon as possible after you’ve thought of a few times that you can meet up. Believe me, the longer you let him think you are not interested the quicker he’ll move on to thinking about other ladies and the more unlikely he’ll take you back. Never ever make a guy wait more than two weeks to see you unless there’s unforeseen circumstances. If it’s gone above that two week mark, then he’ll have forgotten what you were like and things will have to start from the beginning again or worst of all, he’ll have got bored and found someone else.

Advertising – Precious Information Or Vicious Manipulation?

Is advertising the ultimate means to inform and help us in our everyday decision-making or is it just an excessively powerful form of mass deception used by companies to persuade their prospects and customers to buy products and services they do not need? Consumers in the global village are exposed to increasing number of advertisement messages and spending for advertisements is increasing accordingly.

It will not be exaggerated if we conclude that we are ‘soaked in this cultural rain of marketing communications’ through TV, press, cinema, Internet, etc. (Hackley and Kitchen, 1999). But if thirty years ago the marketing communication tools were used mainly as a product-centered tactical means, now the promotional mix, and in particular the advertising is focused on signs and semiotics. Some argue that the marketers’ efforts eventually are “turning the economy into symbol so that it means something to the consumer” (Williamson, cited in Anonymous, Marketing Communications, 2006: 569). One critical consequence is that many of the contemporary advertisements “are selling us ourselves” (ibid.)

The abovementioned process is influenced by the commoditisation of products and blurring of consumer’s own perceptions of the companies’ offering. In order to differentiate and position their products and/or services today’s businesses employ advertising which is sometimes considered not only of bad taste, but also as deliberately intrusive and manipulative. The issue of bad advertising is topical to such extent that organisations like Adbusters have embraced the tactics of subvertising – revealing the real intend behind the modern advertising. The Adbusters magazine editor-in-chief Kalle Lason commented on the corporate image building communication activities of the big companies: “We know that oil companies aren’t really friendly to nature, and tobacco companies don’t really care about ethics” (Arnold, 2001). On the other hand, the “ethics and social responsibility are important determinants of such long-term gains as survival, long-term profitability, and competitiveness of the organization” (Singhapakdi, 1999). Without communications strategy that revolves around ethics and social responsibility the concepts of total quality and customer relationships building become elusive. However, there could be no easy clear-cut ethics formula of marketing communications.

ADVERTISING – PRESCIOUS INFORMATION OR VICIOUS MANIPULATION?

In order to get insights into the consumer perception about the role of advertising we have reviewed a number of articles and conducted four in-depth interviews. A number of research papers reach opposed conclusions. These vary from the ones stating that “the ethicality of a firm’s behavior is an important consideration during the purchase decision” and that consumers “will reward ethical behavior by a willingness to pay higher prices for that firm’s product” (Creyer and Ross Jr., 1997) to others stressing that “although consumers may express a desire to support ethical companies, and punish unethical companies, their actual purchase behaviour often remains unaffected by ethical concerns” and that “price, quality and value outweigh ethical criteria in consumer purchase behaviour” (Carrigan and Attalla, 2001). Focusing on the advertising as the most prominent marketing communication tool we have constructed and conducted an interview consisting of four themes and nine questions. The conceptual frame of this paper is built on these four themes.

THEME I. The Ethics in Advertising

The first theme comprises two introductory questions about the ethics in advertising in general.

I.A. How would you define the ethics in advertising?

The term ethics in business involves “morality, organisational ethics and professional deontology” (Isaac, cited in Bergadaa’, 2007). Every industry has its own guidelines for the ethical requirements. However, the principal four requirements for marketing communications are to be legal, decent, honest and truthful. Unfortunately, in a society where the course of action of the companies is determined by profit targets the use of marketing communications messages “may constitute a form of social pollution through the potentially damaging and unintended effects it may have on consumer decision making” (Hackley and Kitchen, 1999).

One of the interviewed respondents stated that “the most successful companies do no need ethics in their activities because they have built empires.” Another view is that “sooner or later whoever is not ethical will face the negative consequences.”

I.B. What is your perception of the importance of ethics in advertising?

The second question is about the importance of being moral when communicating with/to your target audiences and the way consumers/customers view it. In different research papers we have found quite opposing conclusions. Ethics of business seems to be evaluated either as very important in the decision making process or as not really a serious factor in this process. An example of rather extreme stance is that “disaster awaits any brand that acts cynically” (Odell, 2007).

It may seem obvious that the responsibility should be carried by the advertiser because “his is the key responsibility in keeping advertising clean and decent” (Bernstein, 1951). On the other hand the companies’ actions are defined by the “the canons of social responsibility and good taste” (ibid.). One of the interviewees said:

“The only responsible for giving decent advertising is the one who profits at the end. Company’s profits should not be at the expense of society.”

Another one stated that “our culture and the level of societal awareness determine the good and bad in advertising”.

The increased importance of marketing communications ethics is underscored by the need of applying more dialogical, two-way communications approaches. The “demassification technologies have the potential to facilitate dialogue”, but the “monologic” attitude is still the predominant one (Botan, 1997). Arnold (2001) points out the cases of Monsanto and Esso which had to pay “a price for its [theirs] one-way communications strategy”. In this train of thought we may review ethics in advertisements from two different perspectives as suggested by our respondents and different points of view in the reviewed papers. The first one is that it is imperative to have one common code of ethics imposed by the law. The other affirms the independence and responsibility of every industry for setting its own standards.

THEME II. Which type of regulation should be the leading one in the field of advertising?

The next theme directs the attention towards the regulation system which should be the primary one. Widely accepted opinion is that both self regulation and legal controls should work in synergy. In other words the codes of practice are meant to complement the laws. However, in certain countries there are stronger legal controls over the advertising, e.g. in Scandinavia. On the other hand the industry’s self regulation is preferred in the Anglo-Saxon world. Still, not everyone agrees with the laissez-faire concept.

One of our respondents said:

“I believe governments should impose stricter legal frame and harsher punishment for companies which do not comply with the law.”

Needless to say, the social acceptability varies from one culture/country to another. At the end of the day “good taste or bad is largely a matter of the time, the place, and the individual” (Bernstein, 1951). It would be also probably impossible to set clear-cut detailed rules in the era of Internet and interactive TV. Therefore, both types of regulation should be applied with the ultimate aim of reaching balance between the sacred right of freedom of choice and information and minimizing possible widespread offence. Put differently, the goal is synchronising the “different ethical frameworks” of marketers and “others in society” in order to fill the “ethics gap” (Hunt and Vitell, 2006).

THEME III. Content of Advertisements.

Probably the most controversial issue in the field of marketing communications is the content of advertisements. Nwachukwu et al. (1997) distinguish three areas of interest in terms of ethical judgment of ads: “individual autonomy, consumer sovereignty, and the nature of the product”. The individual autonomy is concerned with advertising to children. Consumer sovereignty deals with the level of knowledge and sophistication of the target audience whereas the ads for harmful products are in the centre of public opinion for a long time. We have added two more perspectives to arrive at five questions in the conducted interviews. The first one concerns the advertisement that imply sense of guilt and praise affluence that in the most cases cannot be achieved and the second one is about advertisements stimulating desire and satisfaction through acquisition of material goods.

III.A. What is your attitude towards the advertisement of harmful products?

A typical example is the advertisement of cigarettes. Nowadays we cannot see slogans like “Camel Agrees with Your Throat” (Chickenhead, accessed 25th September 2007) or “Chesterfield – Packs More Pleasure – Because It’s More Perfectly Packed!” (Chickenhead, accessed 25th September 2007). The general advertisement, sponsorship and other marketing communications means are already prohibited to be used by cigarette producers. Surprisingly, most of the answers of the respondents were not against the cigarettes advertisement. One of the respondents said:

“People are well informed about the consequences of smoking so it is a matter of personal choice.”

As with many other contemporary products the shift in communications messages for cigarettes is oriented towards symbol and image building. The same can be said for the alcohol ads. A well-known example of emotional advertising is the Absolut Vodka campaign. From Absolut Nectar, through Absolut Fantasy to Absolut World the Swedish drink actually aims to be Absolut… Everything.

Advertising of hazardous products is even more harshly criticised when it is aimed at audiences with low individual autonomy, i.e. children. Two main issues in this respect are the manipulation of cigarettes and alcohol as “the rite of passage into adulthood” and the fact that “sales of health-hazardous products (alcohol, cigarettes) develop freely without much disapproval” (Bergadaa, 2007).

III.B. What is your attitude towards the advertisement to children?

Children are not only customers, but also consumers, influencers and users in the family Decision-Making Unit (DMU). Additional difficulty is that they are too impressionable to be deciders in the DMU. At the same time it is not a secret that marketers apply “the same basic strategy of trying to sell the parent through the child’s insistence on the purchase” (Bernstein, 1951). It is not a surprise then that “spending on advertising for children has increased five-fold in the last ten years and two thirds of commercials during child television programs are for food products” (Bergadaa 2007). In the US alone children represent a direct purchases market of $24 billion worth (McNeal cited in Bergadaa, 2007) which certainly is on the top of the agendas of many companies. While exploiting children’s decision-making immaturity advertisers often go too far in dematerialising their products and “teleporting children out of the tangible and into the virtual world of brand names” (Bergadaa 2007). Teenage virtual worlds like Habbo where snack food brands run advertising campaigns are already a fact of life (Goldie, 2007). The imaginative worlds are popular not only online. Hugely successful for creating a fantasy world is Mc Donald’s. The company tops the European list of kids’ advertisers while more than half of the children’s adverts are for junk food.

In some countries there are harsher restrictions to the children advertising.

• “Sweden and Norway do not permit any television advertising to be directed towards children under 12 and no adverts at all are allowed during children’s programmes.

• Australia does not allow advertisements during programmes for pre-school children.

• Austria does not permit advertising during children’s programmes, and in the Flemish region of Belgium no advertising is permitted 5 minutes before or after programmes for children.

• Sponsorship of children’s programmes is not permitted in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden while in Germany and the Netherlands, although it is allowed, it is not used in practice.” (McSpotlight, accessed 20th September 2007).

According to a research by Roberts and Pettigrew (2007) the most frequent themes in children advertising are “grazing, the denigration of core foods, exaggerated health claims, and the implied ability of certain foods to enhance popularity, performance and mood.” But the junk food is not the only reason for parents’ preoccupation. According to a study of Kaiser Family Foundation (Dolliver, 2007) parents are concerned about the amount of advertising of the following products (in order of importance): toys, video games, clothing, alcohol/beer, movies, etc.

The interviewed respondents were unanimous: “The advertising to children should be strictly monitored.” Similar results were obtained in surveys by Rasmussen Reports and Kaiser Family Foundation. Nevertheless, the legal means are just one part of the children’s protection. The other part involves “the decision-making responsibility of parents and teachers” which is “to assist their children in developing a skeptical attitude to the information in advertising” (Bergadaa 2007). The marketers themselves should also be involved in shaping the moral system of our future and “each brand should have its own deontology – a code of practice regarding children – rather than rely on industry codes” (Horgan, 2007).

III.C. Do you think there are many misleading, exaggerating and confusing advertisements. Are many ads promising things that are not possible to achieve?

It will not be exaggerated to state that advertising is in a sense “salesmanship addressed to masses of potential buyers rather than to one buyer at a time” (Bernstein, 1951). Since “salesmanship itself is persuasion” (ibid.) we cannot merely blame advertisers for pursuing their sales goals. However, in the last twenty years or so advertisers have increasingly applied semiotics in their messages and as a consequence ads have begun to function more and more as symbols. One extreme case in this stream of advertising is the creation of idealised image of a person who uses the advertised product. Bishop (2000) draws our attention to two “typical representatives of self-identity image ads” which entice consumers to project the respective images to themselves through use of the products:

- “The Beautiful Woman”;

- “The Sexy Teenagers.

Through setting of such stereotypes advertisers not only mislead the public and exaggerate the effects of products but also provoke low self-esteem in consumers. At the same time they promise results that in most cases are simply impossible to achieve. Instead of promoting “‘glamorous’ anorexic body images” communication messages should use “varied body types” and should drop the idea of the “impossible physical body images” (Bishop, 2000).

To question III.C one of the respondents commented:

“The customers of these products [the ones advertised through thin models] are mostly people who do not have the same physical characteristic. For me, this type of advertising is deliberately aimed at people to make them feel not complete, far from attractive social outsiders.”

However, another interviewed stated that: “every person has his own way of evaluating what is believable and what is misleading. Consumers are enough sophisticated to know what is exaggerated.”

Similarly, Bishop (2000) concludes that “image ads are not false or misleading”, and “whether or not they advocate false values is a matter for subjective reflection.” The author argues that image ads do not interfere with our internal autonomy and if people are misled, it is because they want it. It is all about our free choice of behaviour and no advertisement can modify our desires. Perhaps, the truth lies somewhere in-between the two extreme positions.

III.D. What is your attitude towards advertisement that imply sense of guilt, and praise affluence that in the most cases cannot be achieved?

A more specific case of controversial advertising is the one used to “promote not so much self indulgence as self doubt”; the one that “seeks to create needs, not to fulfill them: to generate new anxieties instead of allaying old ones” (Hackley and Kitchen, 1999). A response of our interviewee reads:

“It is not only a matter of advertising. It has to do with the social inequality and the desire to possess what you can not.”

Hackley and Kitchen (1999) refer to this discrepancy as to “when reality does not match the image of affluence and the result is a subjective feeling of dissonance”. The issue could be elaborated further through the next question.

III.E. Are advertisements stimulating desire and satisfaction through acquisition of material goods moral?

We live in a society which is more or less marked by materialism. Advertisements are often blamed to fuel consumption which is allegedly leading to happiness. The role of promoting satisfaction through acquisition of material goods has become so important that currently the “media products are characterised by relativism, irony, self referentiality and hedonism” (Hackley and Kitchen, 1999). Is the popular saying “those who die with most toys win” really a motivator in consumers’ behavior and could consumption be the cure of emotional dissonance? This seems to be the case provided a brand succeeds to enter in the evoked set of consumer choices. This new “kind of materialism” goes hand in hand with “the emergence of individualism via sheer hedonism along with narcissism and selfishness” (Bergadaa 2007).

THEME IV. Is the quantity of advertisements justified?

IV.A. Do you think there is too much advertising?

An audit of food advertising aimed at children in Australia by Roberts and Pettigrew (2007) revealed that “28.5 hours of children’s television programming sampled contained 950 advertisements.” Actually, we all are being bombarded by ads on TV, Internet, print media, etc. The amount and content of marketing communications messages puts the consumer’s information processing capacity to a test. The exposure to marketing data overload often leads to diluted consumer’s selective perception. Whether our responses are circumscribed by “confusion, existential despair, and loss of moral identity” or we “adapt constructively to the [communications] Leviathan and become intelligent, cynical, streetwise” (Hackley and Kitchen, 1999) is a question open to debate.

Two opposite streams of attitudes were produced in our research. One stance is concerned with the undue quantity of advertisement. The other stream proclaims that “If there is an advertisement, so it is justified by a need.” We agree that the communications overload may indeed have “pervasive effect on the social ecology of the developed world” (Hackley and Kitchen, 1999). If the increasing communication pollution is not managed properly by both legal and industry points of view yet again the advertising will manage “to hoist its foot to its own mouth and kick out a couple of its own front teeth” (Bernstein, 1951).

CONCLUSION

In preparation of this paper we have used qualitative depth interviews in order to get insights for what actual customers opine. We have also substantiated our presentation with references to a number of influential articles in the field of ethics in marketing communications. Generally, our respondents as well as various authors have taken two opposing stances. The first one affirms that ethics in marketing communications matters considerably, whereas the other one downsizes the importance of ethics, thereby stressing the role of other factors in consumer decision-making, i.e. price, brand loyalty, convenience, etc.

Marketers should understand their “responsibility for the emerging portrait of future society” (Bergadaa 2007). Not only there is a need of legal ethical frame but also professional ethical benchmarks and deontology should be in place. One of the main challenges is to avoid creating “a happy customer in the short term”, because “in the long run both consumer and society may suffer as a direct result of the marketer’s actions in ‘satisfying’ the consumer” (Carrigan and Attalla, 2001).

The strength of the advertisement influence exerted on consumers is only one part of the equation. On the other hand we may affirm that consumers are not morally subservient and according to the information process models there is a natural cognitive defense. The communications tools “offer us a theatre of our own imagination” (Hackley and Kitchen, 1999). Consequently, we accept the reality in terms of our own experiences. In this sense marketers do not create reality – they are simply a mirror of the society. We may argue that unfortunately this is not always the case.

Advertising is often deservedly seen as the embodiment of consumer freedom and choice. Notwithstanding this important role, when the choice is “between one candy bar and another, the latest savoury snack or sweetened breakfast cereal or fast food restaurant” (McSpotlight, accessed 20th September 2007) it represents anything else but not an alternative and certainly not a healthy one.

The words of Bernstein (1951), said fifty-six years ago are still very much a question of present interest: “It is not true that if we ‘save advertising, we save all,’ but it seems reasonable to assume that if we do not save advertising, we might lose all.”

2. Univera – The Bad

The Univera business opportunity looks really good at first sight; however, flags start to appear when we see their marketing plan. Like many network marketing businesses, Univera recommends that you grow your business with “relationship” marketing, i.e. selling product to friends, family members, and others that you know. Their program focuses on leveraging your “warm market” to grow your business which worked really well…50 years ago.

We live in a very different society today than we did in the 1950′s, when network marketing first got started. These days, most people do not have large warm markets, and even if they are large, most people do not like to be sold items from their friends and family members.

3. Univera – The Ugly

Another issue is the concept of marketing the business first, the product second. Like many compensation plans, Univera gives out the most generous bonuses for the recruitment of other associates, so form a distributors standpoint, they are compensated for finding distributors first, product-users second.

The problem comes when a new distributor (who is not making any money yet) approaches their warm market with a business opportunity to make money. There is a credibility issue that arises when someone who is making no money is telling other people how they can make a whole lot of money. Many network marketing companies try and resolve this issue with “3-way calling”, where the distributor calls their upline (who is supposedly making money) to talk to their prospect. Unfortunately, this only positions the distributor as a gopher instead of a legitimate business builder.

Growing a Univera business can be a great opportunity. They appear to have some good products, but there are plenty of companies that have great products, and many people that market great products never make a dime. There are also plenty of terrible products that generate millions of dollars in revenue (anyone remember the pet rock?) The difference is the marketer, and their ability to target their market effectively.

In closing, I would say that starting and developing a Univera business is lucrative if you know how to use the telephone, the Internet, and other effective marketing tools to grow your business. It is not a scam, but like any business, success will be determined by the skill-set of the marketer. Univera is definitely not a lottery ticket or a stock option – meaning, you do not just buy in and wait for a payout.

If someone does not have the first clue on how to market effectively, then I would suggest they either learn how to be an effective marketer, or else just use the Univera products as way increase personal health.
